Majors, Minors, & Others

Speaking loosely, I had four majors in my student days in New York. My official college majors were English and history. I also took art-school courses in drawing, illustration, composition, anatomy, perspective, and prepress production. (I’m not sure they even teach such technical subjects in art schools anymore, but that’s a discussion for another time.)

I never told my English professors about my history major. I never told my history professors about my English major. I never told any of my professors about my unofficial art major. And, as a young man, I never even admitted to myself my real major: existential hippiedom, also known as trying to be cool. Literature, art, and history remained lifelong interests of mine. Being cool didn’t.
